Call for Papers: Regenerative Built Environments – Focus on the Future in the Global South

 posted by | 12/01/2023

We are co-editing a new article collection, “Regenerative built environments – Focus on the future in the Global South” with Frontiers in Sustainable Cities (CiteScore1.1).

In this call, we invite papers that share theories and ideas on transformation through regenerative changes in the built environment relevant to the Global South. We invite case studies embedded in theoretical work. Philosophical papers on regenerative design and development for the Global South will also be considered for publication. The resulting publications will build a regenerative knowledge base of towns and cities across the Global South.

We encourage papers related (but not limited) to the following themes:

• Earth, our future – regenerative design and construction
The world continues to design and build according to the Global North practices, causing increasing damage to the natural environment that sustains us. What can practitioners in the built environment professions do to reduce our negative impact on the planet’s biodiversity and climate? How can we be innovative problem-solvers?

• Humanity, the future – energy, water and food security
The built environment encompasses all aspects of our lives. It includes systems that provide water, electricity and food. What technologies can provide short-term or long-term comprehensive adaptations for the energy, food and water security problems that most people in the world face today? What are the challenges we face in this regard, and what solutions are there? How can we achieve climate justice through regenerative system approaches?

• Confronting the future – creating action through advocacy and mobilisation for regenerative change
Worldviews influence human development. Have mechanistic worldviews pushed planetary boundaries too far to sustain future generations? How can the Global South find its voice through ecological worldviews linked to regenerative design and development that prioritise earth and human care beyond profit-driven agendas? What can we proactively relinquish or adapt from our current and past place-based solutions to achieve necessary, transformative, regenerative change?

Frontiers’ average review time from submission to final decision is 89 days. All accepted papers will be published Open Access and made available to the community immediately upon acceptance – papers will be indexed in Web of Science’s ESCI, SCOPUS, and a range of other indexes which can be found on the journal website.

The deadline for manuscript submissions is 31st July 2023, but we can accommodate extensions on a case-by-case basis. If you would like some feedback on your manuscript’s suitability – please submit an abstract by 20th of January 2023.

We hope that you will be happy to contribute! If you are interested, please register via the link below.
