Open Access requirements for REF2029

 posted by | 12/03/2025

Researchers must ensure that all outputs are recorded in the Lincoln Repository (Figshare) immediately upon acceptance, using appropriate metadata, without exception. The Repository is the University’s ‘system of record’ for research output metadata and will be used for reporting on research activity.

All University of Lincoln research outputs published on or after 1 January 2014 shall be made open access unless an exemption has been agreed in advance, this includes depositing an accepted version of the output with an embargo period if required (“green” open access) or paid-for “gold” open access as an alternative. To meet REF requirements, a journal article or published conference proceedings with an ISSN must be live in the University Repository by no later than 12 weeks from the publisher’s date of acceptance and ideally submitted to the repository as soon as possible to allow appropriate checking by the Repository Team before it is put live. If deposits are not compliant with the REF Open Access policy, we may not be able to submit them to the REF.

If you have any queries about making deposits in the repository, the correct version of the output to upload, transitional/transformative agreements or any other aspect of the Open Access requirements for REF, please contact the repository team at repository@lincoln.ac.uk.
