Guidance for staff: non-payment of tuition fees

posted by Ian Richards | 09/06/2025

The University is taking robust action to address the non-payment of tuition fees by students in their final year of study and asks colleagues to note how they can help signpost to appropriate support services.

Students who have not paid their tuition fees in full are not permitted to attend graduation or access their transcript or certificate. This is in accordance with the University’s Tuition Fees Regulations (Part A.4 of the University General Regulations 2024-25) which form a part of our Terms and Conditions of Admission.

Non-payment of tuition fees impacts the University’s finances and raises issues of fairness for other students who pay fees in full. It can also have implications for subsequent employment and visa applications for individuals in some circumstances.

The University’s Finance Department sends regular reminders to student debtors during the academic year about the importance of paying fees in full and methods of payment. This includes help with establishing payment plans and accessing other support where needed.

The deadline for payment of outstanding fees for students entering the June 2025 assessment boards was 15 May 2025.  The University’s Finance Department will soon be sending a reminder to fee debtors about the potential consequences for non-payment of fees, including loss of access to marks, transcripts and certificates. This more robust approach is intended to reduce the amount of unpaid debt owed to the University by students at completion of their studies.

Colleagues in academic and Professional Services departments are asked to signpost any enquiries from students about late payment of tuition fees to the University’s Student Support Centre (SSC). The SSC employs expert staff who are licensed Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) debt advisors. They are professionally qualified to offer informed, independent advice and support to students who may be in financial hardship. Please do not attempt to give debt, immigration or other legal advice to students yourself if approached.

The Student Support Centre can be reached by emailing studentsupport@lincoln.ac.uk or by phoning 01522 837080. The Student Support Centre is located on the ground floor of the Minerva Building. Students can also access independent and confidential advice and support from the Students’ Union Advice Centre.
