The Medieval Mediterranean: Monks, friars and their networks in a fluid space

Recent years have seen an intensification of research on monasticism, both Latin and Greek, in the late medieval Eastern Mediterranean. Often, however, Greek and Latin monasticism are examined in isolation from each other. This seminar will highlight some of the current research in each field of study. Ludivine Voisin examines how the contacts between Greek monks in the Venetian Stato Da Mar with the Orthodox patriarchates under Ottoman rule affected the monks’ relationship with the Venetian authorities. Donal Cooper’s paper reviews recent and ongoing research on the art and architecture of Friars Minor in the Greek areas under Frankish and Venetian rule, and considers outstanding questions and pathways for future work.
