Coin hoards and Roman Lincolnshire
Dr Eleanor Ghey
Curator: Hoards, Department of Money and Medals, The British Museum
Recent years have seen an increase in the reporting of finds of Iron Age and Roman coin hoards from Lincolnshire. What can these tell us about the society and economy of Roman-period Lincolnshire? The talk will review the evidence from recent discoveries, including the large late-third-century coin hoard from Rauceby, as well as some older finds that have been subject to new research.
Norton Disney: the site that keeps on giving
Richard Parker
Secretary, Norton Disney History and Archaeology Group
William Stukeley was the first to write about Norton Disney’s Roman past, while the 1933 discovery of the villa there attracted national attention. In 2023, the Norton Disney History and Archaeology Group confirmed a new Roman settlement 700m from the villa. This talk will explore the recent work, which has made headlines again for the fine dodecahedron, which featured on BBC’s Digging for Britain.
