Understanding and Fighting Prejudice in Western Societies
Sofia Stathi, PhD
University of Greenwich

Ethnic and cultural diversity in western societies is increasing. At the same time, negative attitudes toward multiculturalism and immigration raise social, political, and academic debates on how distinct ethnic/religious groups can live peacefully together. In this talk, research on intergroup relations, attitudes and identity will be discussed in the context of current socio-political events. A line of research that explores the underlying processes of conflict and prejudice in several countries will be presented. Furthermore, theory-driven methods that aim to fight prejudice and improve intergroup relations among adults and children will be analysed and critiqued.
