Call for Papers/expression of interest:
Sustainability in Contemporary Europe – a changing Agenda
Definitions, assumptions and impact

Workshop to be held: 16-17 July 2018 (Monday – Tuesday)

Convenor: EU-Asia Institute at ESSCA School of Management, Angers, France and the Lincoln International Business School, University of Lincoln, UK.

Venue: ESSCA School of Management, Angers –Loire Valley, France.

The interdisciplinary research workshop will bring together scholars and practitioners in the field of sustainable development research, encompassing all its dimensions – economic, and social and environmental sustainability. The objective of the workshop is to analyse the dynamic of European integration in the fields of sustainability policy and action. Questions will be posed about the extent to which a ‘narrowing’ in the definition of the concept of sustainability has taken place, as seen through the lens of the Sustainable Development Goals and in the response of the European Union and European nations in particular. The European Union is portrayed as a global actor in the development of Sustainability Policy. A key question to be addressed is the veracity of this statement and the extent to which a European model of sustainability has emerged.

The focus of the workshop is to provide insights into the diverse reasons for the European Union to position energy and environment at the centre of its actions on sustainability. These are not however the only policy arenas to be impacted by European sustainability action. Contributions are invited from those researching into new economic models [such as the evolution of the European social business initiative] that are concerned with establishing action leading to sustainable development.
Analysis will be devoted to the repercussions of sustainability policies for European Institutions as the process of integration has evolved since the 1950s. Using this analysis attempts will be made to predict how they will affect future inter-institutional relations in the EU and the balance of power between the Member States and the EU.

Contributions should address one of the following themes:

  • Evolution of a European environmental conscience
  • Repercussions of energy and environmental policy for the politics, policies and polity of the EU
  • European social policies, such as redistribution mechanisms with the objective of sustainable development
  • New economic models, such as the evolution of the European social business initiative
  • General analysis of the political agenda of the EU with regard to environment and energy issues, sustainable business models and approaches to social policies.

The workshop has a number of objectives including:
To stimulate academic collaboration between practitioners and scholars.
To establish an interdisciplinary study group on European sustainable development, leading to joint funding applications

Proposed outputs include: –

  • To convene a panel [s] for the 2019 University Association for Contemporary European Studies [UACES] Annual Research Conference – submission deadline January 2019.
  • An edited book based on selected contributions from the call for papers and invited contributors. [Peer review of all the papers from the workshop will be undertaken].

There are no registration fees for this workshop. Venue, lunch and coffee breaks will be covered by ESSCA. Some travel funding may be available for young, early career researchers.
