Bring Santa to Nicaragua!
Hello! My name is Tracey I’m a research lecturer in the School of Psychology. During the last 4 years I have been carrying out research in the remote and rural Southern Caribbean coast of Nicaragua in Central America.
Nicaragua is one of the poorest countries in the world and people living in this remote coastal region of the country are some of the poorest in the country. Most families survive by working the land and growing beans. Generating enough surplus produce to buy ‘luxuries’ like Christmas presents for their children is impossible for most parents.
During the time I have spent in the region, I have come to know and respect the local people, including the children, who have welcomed me in to their communities and homes and took part in our research.
In one village I visited, I did a survey to see what kind of toys children liked to play with. A lot of children did not have any toys at all to show me. Those that did, only had one secondhand soft toy, usually from U.S donations. But as you can see from these pictures, the toy was very important to the children, and they loved their toy very much. None of the children had story books or Lego, or any of the toys that here in the U.K we take for granted.
I am going back to Nicaragua in December to do more research, and my aim is to carry presents for as many of the children as I can! Presents of story books, and building blocks, and dolls and cars!
There are over 6,000 children in 15 small villages in the region. A toy or a book for a child costs approximately £2.50, so raising £5,000 will mean 2,000 children will get a Christmas present this year.
So I am asking you, please take the price of a cup of coffee and give it with warmth to the children in Nicaragua. I will post pictures of the children with their gifts so you can see how much joy the price of a coffee can bring https://www.gofundme.com/bring-santa-to-children-in-rural-nicaragua
