Inclusive Modern Higher Education Practices

 posted by | 16/01/2020

The aim of this workshop is to explore how personal perceptions of others can have unintended impacts on how we practice in modern higher education. You will explore your own unintended preferences and reflect on the impact they can have on your role as an academic member of staff. You will develop skills to overcome such biases, reduce “blind spots” to get better results and reduce unfair treatment in the higher education context. You will also examine how inclusive leadership can impact the student experience and how this in turn will impact the university.

By the end of the workshop, participants will:
•Gain a better understanding of the diversity of students and staff in modern higher education and the need for a more inclusive approach to practice
•Understand how personal perceptions can lead to an ‘unconscious bias’ in the way we see and treat others
•Understand their own biases and the impact these could be having on others and themselves
•Understand how unconscious bias in higher education may lead to discrimination and legal action
•Understand how unconscious bias may play a role in their own role and relationships
•Identify and apply approaches to overcome their own biases
•Be able to promote concepts of inclusivity, including the awareness of unconscious bias in their own teams and working environments

This course is suitable for all academic staff. This session will run on 30th January from 13:30-16:30pm.
