Former University of Lincoln Deputy Vice Chancellor, Professor Toby Wilkinson will be talking to John Raine about his most recent book A World Beneath the Sands and his career as an Egyptologist, in an event for the English Speaking Union, Lincolnshire branch.

Toby is an internationally acclaimed Egyptologist, and the prize-winning author of twelve books which have been translated into twelve languages. He holds a first-class degree and a PhD in Egyptology from the University of Cambridge, and has lectured throughout the world on Egyptian history, ancient and modern. A Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries and of the Royal Historical Society, Toby is a member of the international editorial board of the Journal of Egyptian History. He is Vice Chancellor and Professor of History at Fiji National University, and a Bye-Fellow of Clare College, Cambridge.

John Raine CMG OBE is member of the Lincoln and Lincolnshire Committee of the ESU. Like Toby, he has a long professional connection with the Middle East. He served as an Arabist in the UK Diplomatic Service for over 30 years in several Middle Eastern countries until his retirement in 2017. He is currently Senior Adviser at the international Institute of Strategic Studies in London where he specialises on the Middle East.
