New Turnitin Process for Staff and Students

 posted by | 12/08/2021

We would like to remind all staff about the new process for using Turnitin in the upcoming academic year 2021/22. In July 2021, we introduced a new version of Turnitin which brings enhanced features for staff and students, therefore there is a small change to the process for creating Turnitin Assignments on  Blackboard modules.

The new version of Turnitin should be used by all staff creating assessments from now on, this includes assessments on 20/21 sites for resit purposes. The new version of Turnitin can be found in the ‘Build Content’ menu within your Blackboard module site and is called ‘TurnItIn Feedback Studio (New)’.

This new version of Turnitin brings enhanced features and design improvements, including:

  • For staff, the process of indicating a ‘Postdate’ for grades and feedback has been streamlined with less complexity in optional settings, you will now find the ‘Feedback Release Date’ field in the new Turnitin.
  • Staff will now be able easily access the Assignment Inbox from the ‘Assessments’ area of their Blackboard site, by clicking the assessment title. This replaces the need to access via the site management area in the Site Tools menu.
  • For students, the submission process has been completely redesigned. Throughout the streamlined upload window, students will receive guidance at each stage, and clearer confirmation of a successful upload.

Please note: During the transition, the old version of Turnitin will still be available under the ‘Assessments’ menu. Please do not use this version of Turnitin to create new assessment points. It is likely the older version of TurnItIn will remain available until the end of September 2021 to support courses from the 20/21 academic year that are running over the summer.

In addition to this new process, we have issued guidance around the naming convention used for assessments. We would advise that you name your assessments as follows: ‘Example Assignment (Turnitin Submission)’ as adding the name of the submission tool in brackets after the assessment title, will help to sign post students and remind them that they will be submitting via TurnItIn.

Digital Education have provided technical support and guidance around using the new version of Turnitin on your Blackboard modules, the following links will allow you to access a video tutorial guide and also a PDF help guide for reference
