Peter Mandler, The Jogger, The Mugger and The Hipster: Urban Encounters in Late 20th Century Britain
The City of Lincoln branch of the Historical Association (hosted by the School of History and Heritage) is delighted to be hosting the President of the HA, Professor Peter Mandler, for a talk entitled ‘The Jogger, The Mugger and The Hipster: Urban Encounters in Late 20th Century Britain’.
Abstract: This talk looks at three popular media tropes that aimed to communicate to wider audiences the changing demography of the British city between c. 1960 and c. 2010. Each has its grain of sociological truth but each has also been stylized to convey messages about the opportunities, dangers and qualities of city life. Taken as a sequence, they can be shown to tell a developing story about deindustrialization and gentrification which together in parallel transformed the late 20th century city.
