The Politics of Disorder Research Group Presents: Russia’s Invasion of Ukraine – One Year On

You are invited to join this round table event taking place on Monday 27 March, 1pm – 2:15pm in INB1103.

Event synopsis:

Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has now passed the one-year mark. But how did we get to this position? How has the war gone for Russia and Ukraine, and can we see an end in sight? What are the implications for domestic politics both in Russia and Ukraine? And, what are the implications for broader European and global security? This roundtable features three of the world’s top experts on Ukraine and Russia will discuss these issues and more and will take questions from the audience. Come join us for what will be a stimulating and sobering event.

Our speakers include:

Dr Sarah Whitmore is Reader in Politics at Oxford Brookes University. She completed her MA, PhD and ESRC postdoc at the Centre for Russian and East European Studies at the University of Birmingham, where she is an Honorary Fellow. She is a specialist on Ukrainian politics and the author of State-Building in Ukraine: The Ukrainian Parliament (Routledge) and a number of peer-reviewed articles on Russian and Ukrainian politics. She has provided consultancy including for the FCO, the Cabinet Office and the US Department of State. Her current research has two strands: a British Academy project (with Bettina Renz) about military reform in Ukraine, and about the Ukrainian parliament at war.

Bettina Renz is a Professor of International Security at the University of Nottingham’s School of Politics and International Relations. She completed her PhD a and ESRC Post-Doc at the University of Birmingham’s Centre for Russian and East European Studies. Her current research is a British Academy funded project on Ukrainian military reforms (with Sarah Whitmore). Further, her research expertise is Russian defence and security policy with a particular interest in military modernisation. She has published widely on the subject, including her latest monograph, Russia’s Military Revival, which appeared with Polity in 2018. She has previously lectured for KCL at the RAF College, Cranwell and was a distinguished visiting professor at the Canadian Forces College in 2020.

Edwin Bacon joined the University of Lincoln in 2018 as Reader (now Associate Professor) in International Politics. Before that he had spent over a decade each at Birkbeck University of London and at the University of Birmingham. He is the author of more than half a dozen books on Russian politics and history. He has also been Director of Research at Bishop Grosseteste University, a Senior Research Officer at the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, Expert Adviser to the House of Commons Foreign Affairs Select Committee, Director of the Management of Small Higher Education Institutions Network, and a researcher at the University of Warwick.’
