22 JAN
 posted by Olivia Warbey

Dear All,

We are pleased to announce our next SMM webinar, on Monday 22 January at 17:00, featuring the winner and runner-up of the SMM book prize (see below and attached flyer).

The Dionisius A. Agius Prize, named for the founder and first president of the Society, is awarded biennially for a distinguished first book in the field of medieval Mediterranean studies. This year, our prize winner, Prof. Abigail Balbale, and runner-up, Prof. James Morton, will be giving a brief introduction to their books and research.

Prof. Balbale will talk about the political dilemma of Ibn Mardanīsh in twelfth-century al-Andalus, caught between the Almohads and the Christian kingdom of Castile, but looking east to the authority of the Abbasid caliphate.

Prof. Morton will discuss the Byzantine legacy of religious legal manuscripts in Italy from the Norman conquest through the fourteenth century.

This will be a great opportunity to hear about the leading research on the medieval Mediterranean from outstanding scholars in the field.
