Nicki Pierce, a PhD student and Associate Lecturer from the University of Lincoln will represent the East Midlands at the FameLab national final in June.

Finalists from across the East Midlands captivated the audience with their three-minute presentations, bringing complex scientific concepts to life with clarity and charisma.

A panel of judges, including scientists and communication experts, had the tough job of picking winners from the line-up. They looked for clear messages, engagement with the audience and scientific accuracy. The topics were diverse and included talks about space weather, infectious diseases, education policy, cancer research, e-waste, glaciers, dinosaurs and bacteria.

Nicki’s pitch focussed on her research around the abandonment of white working-class girls in education. She will be entered into the UK final held at Cheltenham Science Festival in June.

The full results of the competition were:

Winner: Nicki Pierce, University of Lincoln

2nd Place: Teresa Castle-Green, University of Nottingham

3rd Place: Luke Richardson, University of Sheffield

Audience Choice Award: Luke Richardson, University of Sheffield
