Dame Elizabeth Esteve-Coll DBE 1938-2024
It is with great sadness we mourn the passing of the former Chancellor of the University of Lincoln, Dame Elizabeth Esteve-Coll DBE.
Dame Elizabeth served as Chancellor for seven years during a pivotal time in the University’s development, from 2001-2008, and in 2008 was presented with an honorary doctorate of arts and the title Chancellor Emerita during a farewell ceremony at Lincoln Cathedral.
A lifelong advocate of the arts, she became the first female director of a national arts collection when she was appointed as Director of the Victoria and Albert (V&A) Museum in 1987.
She was awarded the Order of the Rising Sun, Gold Rays with Neck Ribbon in November 2005 in recognition of her outstanding contribution to the promotion of Japanese culture and studies to British people.
During her time as Chancellor, Dame Elizabeth contributed to significant development and progress. The bridge opposite the Library and Engine Shed is named in her honour.
The University sends best wishes and condolences to Dame Elizabeth’s family, friends, colleagues and loved ones.
