Staff Health Check Success

A big thank you to all staff who engaged with the ‘Heart Health Assessments’ in October and November this year at the Riseholme and Brayford campuses.

The free health checks are the result of a recent collaboration between the Staff Wellbeing Team in People, Performance and Culture (PPC) and the Sport and Exercise Science consultancy team (Dr Rebecca Jones, Tina El Bikam and Dr Mel Bargh). Staff were able to receive a professional health check on body composition, cardiovascular health and physical activity, followed by a confidential health report of their individual data.

Rosie Damarell, People Engagement and Wellbeing Manager in PPC, highlighted: “The health and wellbeing of colleagues across the University continues to be a priority and by working in collaboration with the School of Psychology, Sport Science and Wellbeing we have been able to utilise internal expertise to expand our offering and fund Heart Health Assessments. These checks provide colleagues with a unique opportunity to understand more about their health which wouldn’t necessarily be available to them otherwise. The results have been incredible and have identified underlying, and previously unknown, life changing conditions which will now enable those individuals to access essential medical treatment. The checks also provide excellent research and clinical hours to the School of Psychology, Sport Science and Wellbeing, directly positively impacting the experience and teaching for our students.”

The events have been a significant success for the University, with an overview of the data displayed in the infographic. Dr Mel Bargh, Head of Consultancy positively commented that, “We hope that these events will strengthen the partnership we have with PPC, while providing an essential service to staff at the University.

The uptake to these days has been outstanding and we hope to continue this in the coming years. Given the positive experience of these screening sessions and the engagement of university staff we are now looking to continue this into the New Year.” The next Heart Health Assessment Clinic will be held in January 2025. When bookings are live they will be advertised on Staff News and through Colleague Line.
