Cafe Scientifique
Can modern technology help us reveal the unravel the mysteries of the past?
Digital advances have rapidly transformed the landscape in the sphere of history and heritage, opening up new opportunities for discovery, and providing access to new and exciting material that had previously been lost. In this talk, we will explore how multi-spectral imaging (MSI) has unearthed new insights into the episcopate of one of Lincoln’s medieval bishops, Bishop Thomas Bek (1342-1347). Bek lived in a dynamic and changing world, as the papacy was increasingly exerting power over ecclesiastical appointments in England. Recovered text can now reveal greater understanding into his administration and the wider state of the early fourteenth-century English Church.
