Staff Invited to Make Nominations for University Honorary Awards

posted by Ian Richards | 28/06/2023

Members of University staff are invited to nominate individuals they feel should be recognised through a University Honorary Doctorate at future graduation ceremonies.

Honorary graduates provide role models and inspiration for our students and staff. After receipt of their award we would expect them to develop relationships with Schools related to their expertise and act as ambassadors for the University.

An Honorary Doctorate is awarded to those who have made a major contribution to their chosen field at national or international level and who have connections to the University, City and/or the ceremonial County of Lincolnshire. That field might be education and academia, public service and the community, business and industry, the arts, politics and national leadership, philanthropy or any other area of public benefit in which the honorand has shown pre-eminence.

All members of University staff can nominate suitable candidates for an Honorary Award. Nominations must remain confidential (they must not be discussed with the nominee in advance). Nominations are considered by the University Honours Committee who select recipients to be invited to receive awards at the University’s graduation ceremonies in January or September.

When considering a nomination, the Honours Committee will evaluate whether there is any publicly available information about the nominee which might impact the University’s reputation were they to be awarded an Honorary Degree. Before making a nomination, please carry out a basic search of readily available sources (e.g. Google, Wikipedia) and note in your nomination any information which might be relevant. It is important that you do not disclose any confidential information.

If you would like to nominate a suitable candidate or candidates for an Honorary Award, please contact Rachel Chrispin in the Vice Chancellor’s Office by email to: rchrispin@lincoln.ac.uk. Please give:

  • the nominee’s full name (including titles)
  • contact information if available
  • a short statement of how they meet the appropriate criteria
  • a note setting out the nominee’s connection to the University, City and/or the ceremonial County of Lincolnshire
  • a note confirming that you have carried out a search of publicly available information on the nominee and a summary of any information that might be relevant to the University’s reputation.

Please send nominations by Friday 28 July 2023.
