Lincoln Lecturer Publishes New Book with Cambridge University Press
Dr Owen Clayton, Senior Lecturer, has recently published a monograph with Cambridge University Press’s American Literature and Culture series.
The book Vagabonds, Tramps, and Hobos: The Literature and Culture of U.S. Transiency, 1890–1940 argues that the white, hyper masculine ‘pioneer hobo’ image of popular culture is a misrepresentation.
It does so by examining a range of works created by transient artists and thinkers, including travel literature, fiction, memoir, early feminist writing, poetry, sociology, political journalism, satire, and music. The book proves new ways to think about transiency and about working-class literary and artistic culture more broadly.
