Annual Medieval Studies Lecture: Janina Ramirez
Annual Medieval Studies Lecture: “How Writing Medieval Women Back into History Can Change Past, Present, and Future”, by Janina Ramirez, Visiting Professor at the University of Lincoln.
The Medieval Studies Research Group is delighted to welcome Janina to the University of Lincoln.
Following on from the success of her number one best-selling book, Femina, and sharing new research for the first time, Janina will reveal how returning to the evidence and taking on established versions of history, through the lens of medieval women, highlights social and political injustices over the last few centuries.
By unpacking issues of gender, class and nationalism, Janina will challenge how we have been conditioned to view the past. What emerges from studying women like Catherine of Siena, Marie of Oginies, and Brigit of Sweden is how those in power have skewed our historical accounts to their own ends.
Seeing this clearly may enable writing different, more inclusive and positive narratives. Ranging from the fifth to the fifteenth century and drawing in art, literature, archaeology, and science, this lecture will present new ways of engaging with history.
This talk is free to attend and will take place on Friday 15 March at 5.30 pm in the Cargill Lecture Theatre, Minerva Building, Brayford Pool Campus.
