Students Turn Guildhall and Stonebow into Advent Calendar for 2024

Original artwork created by University of Lincoln students is being displayed in the form of an advent calendar at the city’s Guildhall and Stonebow, in the lead up to Christmas Day.

Each day, a new piece of artwork is displayed in the windows of the historic building, as the result of a new collaboration between the Lincoln Arts Centre, the University’s School of Creative Arts, and the City of Lincoln Council. Inspiration was taken from a yearly advent calendar celebration in Lincoln’s twin city, Neustadt an der Weinstrasse.

The Lincoln Guildhall Winter Exhibition marks a new partnership between these organisations, and this year will be the first iteration of an installation which is hoped to become an annual festive tradition. The advent calendar presents a fantastic new opportunity for emerging student artists to have their artwork showcased to members of the public, which will be seen by countless residents and visitors to Lincoln.

The Guildhall has been described as the most important late medieval gateway standing in the country – its appearance has remained the same for more than five centuries, and each year, millions of people walk through this iconic landmark.

Associate Professor and Creative Engagement Producer at the University, Rachel Baynton said: “We’ve had lots of fun working on this project that celebrates our city’s history, it’s future, and the festive season. The students have had just a short week to contribute to this project and have responded to themes of togetherness, hope and joy, as well as the idea of building local and global relationships – inspired by our twin city of Neudstadt.

“It’s been a joy to see their creative interpretations of these themes, and the fun they’ve had with some of their submissions! This is the first time we’ve tried this and we’re grateful to the Guildhall and City of Lincoln Council for providing the opportunity, and to Lincoln Arts Centre for their support. We’re looking forward to seeing the Stonebow windows full, and to extending and expanding the project in the years to come.

Exhibitions will be situated on the south-facing side of the Guildhall from Sunday 1 December, with new artwork showcased daily until Tuesday 24 December.
