From December 11 to 14, 2024, Dr. Amira Elnokaly represented the University of Lincoln on a global stage as a keynote speaker at the prestigious UNESCO event titled “Sukhothai Heritage, Creative Crafts, and Lifelong Learning Communities.” The international event was organised by UNESCO’s World Heritage Sites, Creative Cities Network, and Global Network of Learning Cities and took place in the historic UNESCO World Heritage city of Sukhothai, Thailand. This international event attracted over 300 participants from 20 different countries.
Dr. Elnokaly’s keynote address, “Preserving Cairo: Integrating Climate Policy with Urban Development,” drew attention to the intersections of cultural heritage preservation and climate-conscious urban development. This significant contribution sparked thought-provoking discussions about the broader role of heritage in achieving sustainable development goals.
In addition, Dr. Elnokaly conducted an interactive workshop addressing the critical question, “How can Sukhothai foster culture, crafts, and creativity into lifelong communities to address climate change and achieve sustainable development?” The workshop engaged policy makers and local stakeholders and highlighted actionable strategies to empower communities through cultural preservation and creative innovation.
Dr. Elnokaly’s contributions were honoured with a prestigious award presented by the Mayor of Sukhothai, Mr. Viroon Phantevee, alongside UNESCO Focal Point Mr. Weerawit Chanthawarang.
Post-event, Dr. Elnokaly was invited to the Sukhothai College of Dramatic Arts for discussions on potential research collaborations and knowledge exchange initiatives. She also enjoyed an exceptional showcase of traditional Thai heritage performances by the College’s talented students, reinforcing the shared global commitment to preserving and celebrating cultural heritage.
