University’s approach to UCU industrial action – June 2025

posted by Ian Richards | 27/06/2025

The University and College Union (UCU) has begun a period of industrial action at the University.

This includes Action Short of a Strike (ASOS) starting Wednesday 25 June and a planned strike on Friday 4 July.

Plans are in place to minimise disruption to our students, staff and prospective applicants and to ensure university business continues. Most colleagues will not be taking part in the industrial action. The dispute relates to the University’s current restructuring and refusal to rule out the possibility of compulsory redundancies. UCU secured a mandate for industrial action following a ballot of its members. About one in three academic colleagues are members of UCU.

Colleagues are reminded that participation in industrial action is a breach of the contract of employment and the University reserves the right to make pay deductions accordingly. Details can be found in the University’s Industrial Action Policy and on the Portal pages of the Department for People, Performance and Culture (see link below)

We ask all staff members and students to be tolerant of different viewpoints and to respect our One Community values. We know this can be a difficult time for colleagues and thank you for your continued professionalism and support.
