Crystals and Medicine research development seminar – 28th September
Professor Nick Blagden will lead the next research development seminar entitled Crystals and Medicine. The application of crystal science to drug development will be presented in this seminar.
- Date: Wednesday 28th September 2016
- Time: 12pm-2pm (12-1pm presentation with Q&A, 1-2pm optional discussion and action planning)
- Location: MHT Building, 3rd Floor, MC3108
Synopsis:
For many drugs the pipeline between synthesis and biological activity generates potential active pharmaceutical compounds with poor process ability or bio availability. 90% of drugs are delivered using solid dosage forms such as tablets, and the active compounds are typically in a crystalline form. In order to improve bio availability, the crystal science of the drug is manipulated, using crystal engineering and supra molecular approaches.
These topics will be covered and examples will be presented showing exactly what can be achieved. The current crystal science research is funded by GSK and Astra Zeneca and has previously received financial support from the EPSRC, Pfizer, Syngenta, and Merck. The University has national and international reputation in this area. The team is currently led jointly by Professor Blagden, along with Professor Ian Scowen, Dr Tasnim Munshi, and Dr Elisa Nauha. The group has five PhD students funded by industry or overseas sponsors. This area also strongly overlaps with research interests in Pharmacy – in particular polymer, biologic and nano drug delivery.
The aim of this seminar is to have input from other colleagues to improve the concept and to proceed with this research proposal. The Lincoln Institute for Health extends a warm welcome to all interested in this exciting area.
