Festival Social Science

Academics from across the College of Social Science will host a series of events as part of the Economic Research Council’s national Festival of Social Science which will take place from the 4th to 11th November.

The annual festival is a celebration of the social sciences and aims to offer an insight into leading social science research and how it influences society. The University of Lincoln events are:

‘Imagining a Child-Friendly Lincoln’ | 4th November | Issac Newton Building

Sue Bond-Taylor and Dr Anna Tarrant from the School of Social and Political Sciences will invite local children and families to share their experiences of growing up in Lincoln with the launch the Children of Lincoln project. The project is working towards having Lincoln recognised as a UNICEF Child Friendly City. The event will include a range of fun family activities, and the winners of the project’s logo design competition unveiling.

The Community Lab | 4th November | Skegness Aquarium

Dr Kay Ritchie from the School of Psychology will host a day of interactive hands-on demonstrations and fun activities to help visitors learn new things about how the brain works. The event will showcase exciting ideas in psychology, as well as recent research from the University of Lincoln.

‘Happy Classrooms, Happy People’ | 6th November | Minerva Building

Dr Helen Childerhouse from the School of Education will hold a session with local school children and teachers to establish what makes their classrooms a happier place to be. The session will include a graffiti wall to visually record ideas which will be collated and distributed to the schools involved for use at a later date. Please note, this event is now fully booked.

‘Supporting Victims of Crime in Lincolnshire and Beyond’ | 8th November | David Chiddick Building

Professor Matthew Hall from the Lincoln Law School will host a one-day conference and public seminar to discuss the latest research findings on the support needs of victims or crime and the availability of local support services. The event will include contributions from the Police and Crime Commissioner, Lincolnshire Police, and the local victims’ support hub ‘Victim Lincs’.

Pop-up Social Science Park | 9th November | Bud Robinson Community Centre

Professor Jacqui Briggs will bring the social sciences into the heart of the community with a one-day event of talks and activities from across the College of Social Sciences. Activities will include free Body MOT’s from the School of Sport and Exercise Science, advice on how to become a teacher from the School of Education, and a talk on the social impact of crime from the Lincoln Law School.
