Hugh will use this opportunity to talk about “Maps and apps: accelerating disease elimination with data science and technology”
Diseases are inherently spatially variable, affecting populations in dramatically different ways. Understanding and predicting this variation in space and time offers an opportunity to target limited resources to those who need it, maximising impact of interventions.
However, disease programs typically lack the expertise and capacity to analyse spatial data in a meaningful way. This presents a missed opportunity. With a focus on tropical diseases such as malaria and lymphatic filariasis, Hugh will present examples of how machine learning, spatial statistics and technology can be combined and made more accessible to help target and track interventions.
Dr. Hugh Sturrock is Chief Science Officer and co-founder of Locational, a startup helping organizations leverage spatial data to solve problems. A spatial epidemiologist by training, Hugh leads the development and implementation of spatial statistics and machine learning at Locational.
Hugh was formerly an Associate Professor of Epidemiology and Biostatistics at the UCSF Global Health Group and led the Google and Bill and Melinda Gates funded Disease Surveillance and Risk Monitoring (DiSARM) project.
He has experience working with satellite imagery and other remotely sensed data and has over 50 peer reviewed publications. Prior to joining the Global Health Group, he completed a MSc in Zoology at the University of Otago, New Zealand and a PhD at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, investigating optimal survey methods for Neglected Tropical Diseases and Malaria.
Hugh has worked in, or with, a number of countries including Kenya, South Sudan, Namibia, Swaziland and Yemen. His work has been featured in numerous peer-reviewed publications as well in media articles in The Guardian, BBC, New York Times and the San Francisco Chronicle. Hugh was also featured on a PBS Newshour segment focused on the DiSARM project.
